Dear Visitor!

Reifenberger_2

Welcome to the Institute of Neuropathology at the Heinrich-Heine-University Duesseldorf! Neuropathology is concerned with the diagnosis and scientific investigation of diseases of the nervous system and skeletal muscles. The Institute of Neuropathology in Duesseldorf is one of the largest institutions of its kind in Germany. Our scientific focus is to understand the molecular causes of diseases of the central nervous system diseases, in particular brain tumors and neurodegenerative brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and prion disease, and to develop novel approaches in order to better diagnose and treat these diseases. In our diagnostic work, we analyze tissue samples from neurosurgical operations, stereotactic biopsies, biopsies of skeletal muscles and peripheral nerves, vascular biopsies, skin biopsies and samples of cerebrospinal fluid. We perform clinical and forensic autopsies. Besides conventional histological techniques, we regularly use state of the art methods of immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy and molecular biology for diagnostic purposes. More information about the people in our institute, our scientific interests and diagnostic offerings, and our teaching activities for students is available throughout these web pages.
